Since its foundation in 1987, Production IG has
seen incredible changes in the Japanese
animation business. Digital animation has almost
totally replaced the old 'cel' methods, creating
massive alterations in the way that animé is
produced and sold. Directors who have worked
with the company include acclaimed creators
Mamoru Oshii and Hiroyuki Kitakubo.
Jonathan Clements, co-author of the Animé Encyclopaedia, presents an introduction to Production IG, showcasing the company's achievements in digital effects and motion capture, and revealing some of the tricks of the animé trade, as used in such movies as GHOST IN THE SHELL, PATLABOR and KILL BILL.
We screen a selection of full episodes from CROMARTIE HIGH SCHOOL (the crazy high school comedy), LE CHEVALIER D'EON (IG's brand new show featuring musketeers vs. zombies!)
We conclude the evening with the promotional UK premiere of GHOST IN THE SHELL: STANDALONE COMPLEX – SOLID STATE SOCIETY. This third GHOST IN THE SHELL movie sees our heroes dealing with a seemingly unconnected set of tragedies: a rash of suicides, child abductions and a healthcare conspiracy. They encounter a 'Wizard Class' hacker known as the Puppeteer, all played out against a backdrop of corporate wrongdoings and political wrangling.
Hugh David of ADV Films and Jerome Mazandarani of Manga Entertainment will introduce the screenings – together at last!
