SCREEN ONE:

Alien
Dir: Ridley Scott
Country: UK
Language: English
Runtime: 117
Year: 1979
When commercial towing vehicle Nostromo, heading back to Earth, intercepts an SOS signal from a nearby planet, the crew are under obligation to investigate. After a bad landing on the planet, some crewmembers leave the ship to explore the area. At the same time as they discover a hive colony of some unknown creature, the ship's computer deciphers the message to be a warning, not a call for help. When one of the eggs is disturbed, the crew do not know the danger they are in until it is too late.

The first of this classic franchise, Alien is the most disturbing of the four movies and keeps you on the edge of your seat. Tense and dark this movie is perfect for the big screen.

Aliens
Dir: James Cameron
Country: USA
Language: English
Runtime: 137
Year: 1986
The only survivor of the Nostromo, Ripley is discovered in deep sleep half a century later by a salvage ship. When she is taken back to Earth, she learns that a human colony was founded on the same planet where the aliens were first found. After contact with the colony is lost, she finds herself sent back to the planet along with a team of warriors bent on destroying the alien menace forever, and saving any survivors -- if any remain.

This movie is said to be one of the greatest sci-fi features ever made. Whilst the first movie was more horror in feel, Aliens is an adrenalin ride, action all the way, a great cast and full of fantastic one-liners. This is the ultimate "bug-hunt"

Alien 3
Dir: David Fincher
Country: USA
Language: English
Runtime: 114
Year: 1992
After escaping from the alien planet, the ship carrying Ellen Ripley crashes onto a remote and inhabited ore refinery, now prison. While living in the prison until her employers rescue her, Ripley discovers the horrifying reason for her crash: An alien stowaway. As the alien matures and begins to kill off the inhabitants, Ripley is unaware that her true enemy is more than just the killer alien.

This movie is different in mood and style from the first two in the series. The film has a dark tone and a stylish look but will always suffer from the brilliance of its predecessors.

Alien Resurrection
Dir: Jean-Pierre Jeunet
Country: USA
Language: English
Runtime: 109
Year: 1997
200 years after the conclusion of Alien 3, the company is able to resurrect Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) through the process of cloning and the scientists successfully take the Queen Alien out of her. But, Ripley's DNA gets mixed up with the Queen's and she begins to develop certain alien characteristics. The scientists begin breeding the aliens, but they later escape. Soon the Xeno-morphs are running amok on the ship, which is on course to earth. The Queen then gives birth to a deadly new breed of alien, which could spell disaster for the entire human race. It's up to Ripley and a band of space pirates to stop the ship before it reaches earth.

Much argued about, this final film in the series leaves some cold, others laughing. There is no denying the slick style and great performances from Weaver and the supporting crew. A much stronger film than Alien 3, it is a good end to the franchise. Well until a fifth movie comes along!!!

For the first time all four movies are shown back to back on the big screen - bring stamina and comfy shoes!

SCREEN THREE:

Jin Roh:
The Wolf Brigade

Dir
:Hiroyuki Okiura
Country: Japan
Language: Japanese (Subtitled)
Runtime: 98
Year: 1998
A bleak, and alternate version of post-WW2 Tokyo, Jin-Roh accomplishes all the things that other anime cinema movies who were hailed as the holy grail of anime didn't accomplish, or at least never accomplished so well. And Jin-Roh does it with style.

The animation is impressive; sober, lifelike and extremely realistic chara designs move with wonderful fluidity through some very beautiful backgrounds.
The story, at it's most basic is a doomed lovers tale. Jin-Roh doesn't try to shock or disgust, it wants to make you cry genuine tears of sorrow, and succeeds in every way

Akira

Bad Taste

Four dim-witted men from the New Zealand National Air Defence League arrive in a small fishing village to investigate Ufo landings.

They take on a battalion-sized army who have massacred the twon's population in a plan to use humans as ingredients in their intergalactic fast-food chain.

Funny and gross. In the worst possible taste a movie from the Director of Lord of the Rings.

Would you drink someone else's vomit to save the world? :)

Electric Dragon 80,000 volts
Dir: Sogo Ishii
Country: Japan
Language: Japanese
Runtime: 55
Year: 2000
Dragon Eye Morrison is hit by lightening and receives an enormous electrical charge as a child. Since then he runs crazy with rage, communicates telepathically with reptiles and can only find solace in the sounds of his electric guitar. A new challenge faces him when he meets "Thunderbolt Buddha", who was also charged by lightning.
On the roofs of Tokyo's skyscrapers the two meet for the final showdown. Live action Manga, truly cyberpunk

They Live
Dir: John Carpenter
Country: USA
Language: English
Runtime: 93
Year: 1988
Nada, a down-on-his-luck construction worker, discovers a pair of special sunglasses. Wearing them, he is able to see the world as it really is: people being bombarded by media and government with messages like "Stay Asleep", "No Imagination", "Submit to Authority". Even scarier is that he is able to see that some usually normal-looking people are in fact ugly aliens in charge of the massive campaign to keep humans subdued.

They Live is a turn back to the classic sci-fi films of the 1950's, while introducing a tinge of Orwellianism and incorporating action and horror elements.

Dark Star
Dir: John Carpenter
Country: USA
Language: English
Runtime: 83
Year: 1974

What would you be like after 20 years aboard DARK STAR the spaced-out spaceship. The ultimate cosmic comedy!

Low-budget story of four astronauts in deep space, whose mission is to destroy unstable planets in star systems which are to be colonised. The late Commander Powell is stored in deep freeze, where he is still able to offer advice. As their mission nears completion, they must cope with a runaway alien which resembles a beach-ball, faulty computer systems, and a "smart bomb" who thinks it is God.

A surreal sci-fi movie with a metaphysical discussion between man and bomb!

The Thing
Dir: John Carpenter
Country: USA
Language: English
Runtime: 109
Year: 1982

Man is The Warmest Place to Hide.

An American scientific expedition to the frozen wastes of the Antarctic is interrupted by a group of seemingly mad Norwegians pursuing and shooting a husky. The helicopter pursuing the dog crash-lands leaving no explanation for the chase. During the night, the dog mutates and attacks other dogs in the cage and members of the team that investigate. The team soon realises that an alien life-form with the ability to take over other bodies is on the loose and they don't know who may already have been taken over.
This is a very scary movie, one of the best horror/sci-fi films ever made. A must see on the big screen.

Escape from New York
Dir: John Carpenter
Country: USA
Language: English
Runtime: 99
Year: 1981
