Klaus Kinski stars in this much-underrated movie
from the early eighties. Max and his scientist master (Kinski) live on a remote
space station. When a trio of fugitives joins them, Max tries to get a lift to
Earth.
Androids have been outlawed on Earth because at a certain age,
an android becomes disrespectful, insubordinate, and obsessed with sex. In other
words, they turn into adolescents. Max is bashful as one of the fugitives is a
‘real’ woman.
The plot lines are clichéd and full of holes, the ending
is a bit of a cheat, and the special effects are weak. But the film works, because
it pays close attention to Max’s isolated world.
THE MOVIE TOUCHES ON SERIOUS ISSUES LIKE WHAT IT MEANS TO BE HUMAN, AND THE NATURE
OF FREE WILL. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
