SCI-FI-LONDON 5

Five fantastical tales of crime and mayhem intersect in this absurdist Japanese comedy that has more inventive storytelling and surreal imagery than a dozen Miike movies.

From the lunatics who bought us ELECTRIC DRAGON 80,000v and ICHI THE KILLER comes a fabulously eccentric movie.

The five interconnected stories involve a businessman and his family, a stage hypnotist, a murderer with a wife who won't stay dead, a young gang of useless burglars and a hopeless advertising executive, whose lives are all touched by a knife-throwing hitman played by Vinnie Jones.

Like dreams, the stories have their own logic and are best enjoyed for what they are, which in this case is weird and humorous.

Even if you lose the plot, it doesn't matter because the visuals are a delight in themselves, with vibrant colours reminiscent of Baz Luhrman's Moulin Rouge and the subtler ones of Wong Kar-Wai's 2046, and the sets are filled with details that definitely invite a second viewing to fully absorb.

This movie will appeal to a very particular taste – I can imagine Jonathan Ross enjoying it, especially as it also features Sonny Chiba. If you like wild Japanese films, you won't find better than this.

If you thought there were clever cuts in PULP FICTION and MEMENTO, forget it. SS5 offers something fresh, funny, ultra-violent, sexy and completely riveting – this is what film was made for, cool, funny, meticulously designed and with an impeccable soundtrack.
