The Unborn

What is the difference between supernatural films and horror films? Not being much of a fan of the horror genre (as in scary movies) I find films and TV shows (such as, erm, Supernatural) about the supernatural quite intriguing, especially if they are based around some sort of established mythology. OK I don’t include THE EXORCIST in that list of films I like because it was way too scary, but recent films such as DRAG ME TO HELL and The UNBORN certainly fit the bill.

THE UNBORN, which is out DVD from June 22, is the story of 19-year-old Casey Beldon (Oddette Yustman from Cloverfield) who, from the outset of the film starts having disturbing visions of a young boy with strange blue eyes, as her nightmares increase her brown eyes begin to change to blue, By “chance” she also discovers a dark family secret that stretches back to the time of the Nazi concentration camps, a secret that requires an exorcism by a rabbi, played by Gary Oldman of all people. This written and directed by David S. Goyer, who also wrote the story for BATMAN BEGINS (so there is an Oldman connection), all the BLADE movies (as well as directing the third one) and the excellent DARK CITY.

Although it is a tale of the supernatural it still manages to get its fair share of scary moments and disturbing imagery, and anything with evil children in always has that extra bit of creepiness. And those gratuitous shots of Yustman wandering around in her underwear are a pleasant distraction from the horror unfolding around her.

THE UNBORN is out on DVD and Blu-ray on June 22 from Universal Pictures and is available from major retailers including Amazon and Play.
